Great Armoury in Gdańsk, also known as the arsenal, is the most magnificent secular edifice among the mannerist buildings of Gdańsk.
The Armoury was constructed from 1602 until 1605. It was built from fine, red bricks with ornaments made of sandstone and opulent gildings. The construction appears to be composed of four seemingly separate tenement houses.
The ground floor with the joint area of 1819 m² and the ceiling supported by fifteen granite pillars houses a shopping arcade; the higher-up storeys are the seat of the Academy of Fine Arts. The area of the cellars amounts to 1528 m².
Showcasing weaponry and other military equipment, the original function armoury could be compared to contemporary military museums with the reservation that the seventeenth-century Gdańsk accepted the fact that it may become necessary to use the collection.
